The Testing Appointment
Before testing, water should be added to infrequently used sinks, tubs, showers, and floor drains to fill their traps. Homeowners should also mention respiratory sensitivities before the appointment.
The technician identifies the section being tested, introduces non-toxic, non-staining smoke, and observes roof vents, fixtures, walls, floors, and exterior areas for escape points. Any defects are documented, and the findings are used to recommend targeted repairs.
A small amount of smoke entering the building can usually be cleared by opening doors and windows. It is also an important warning: an opening that admits test smoke may allow sewer gas to enter under normal conditions.
