Water Expansion Tanks in Danville, VA

Water expands as it heats inside a water heater. In an open plumbing system, some of that additional volume may move backward toward the public water supply. Many modern homes, however, have a closed system created by a check valve, pressure-reducing valve, or backflow preventer. A water expansion tank gives heated water a safe place to expand instead of placing excess pressure on pipes, fixtures, valves, and the water heater. Pro-Flo Plumbing installs and replaces water expansion tanks in Danville, VA, helping homeowners protect their plumbing equipment from avoidable stress.

The Role of an Expansion Tank

An expansion tank is a small pressurized tank connected to the cold-water line near the water heater. Inside, a flexible diaphragm separates water from a cushion of compressed air.

As heated water expands, a small amount enters the tank and compresses the air chamber. When the water cools or a fixture opens, that water returns to the plumbing system. This process helps stabilize pressure and reduce repeated strain on plumbing components.

Signs an Expansion Tank May Be Needed

A homeowner may need an expansion tank when the plumbing system is closed and the water heater does not already have adequate thermal-expansion protection.

Warning signs of excessive pressure may include dripping from the water heater’s temperature and pressure relief valve, fluctuating pressure, banging pipes, leaking faucet cartridges, or premature failure of supply lines and fixtures. A pressure gauge test can help determine whether pressure rises significantly while the water heater operates.

Tank Lifespan and Replacement

Expansion tanks commonly last several years, but their service life depends on water pressure, temperature, tank quality, and installation. A failed internal diaphragm can allow the tank to become waterlogged and stop absorbing expansion.

Replacement may be needed when the tank leaks, shows heavy corrosion, sounds completely solid when tapped, or no longer maintains the correct air charge. The tank should also be inspected when replacing the water heater.

My brother’s apartment was flooding from a very old and non maintenance water heater. The property manager was not capable of getting a plumber there for an emergency that happened around midnight. Marybeth at Pro-Flo Plumbing was able get someone out there in a timely fashion. I’m grateful that they were able to remove the most of water shut off the water.

Pro Flo plumbing fixed two issues in our home that we had been putting off. The price was fair, our plumbers were outstanding and both jobs were done right.
Pro Flo also has now helped the nonprofit animal shelter my wife and I work with (APS Caswell) twice and did a great job for the shelter as well. When you go with Pro Flow, you can count on knowledgeable professionals explaining everything thoroughly, and getting the job done right for a reasonable price. I know my family are Pro Flo customers for life.

Paid this company for nothing! Told them the issue (disconnected pipe and clogged) the man claimed he climbed under the house and seen no issue then charged me a service fee but he didn’t do anything and I had to call another company out and they had the problem fixed within an hour and a new pipe connected.

Problems Caused by Incorrect Installation

An undersized tank may not absorb enough expanded water. Excessive or incorrect air pressure can also prevent proper operation.

Other installation problems include poor support, placement on the wrong piping connection, installation too far from the water heater, or failure to match the tank’s precharge to the home’s water pressure. A heavy, waterlogged tank without adequate support may damage nearby piping.
